I discovered LAST, a five-piece melodic punk rock band from Wollongong, Australia, last year with one of their previous singles. So when Guillaume, one of my PRA partners, told me they were going to release a new record, I was really looking forward to hear it because I knew it would be great. And it truly is!
LAST released L.AS.T.A.D.H.D.E.P. on January 5th, 2020. 10 songs, 9 min. 54 s. If you have ADHD, you definitely have to pay attention if you press Play or else you might miss amazing short songs! And trust me when I tell you you don’t want to miss a single one.
I’ll be honest and say that I’ve always been prejudiced against short punk rock songs. Most of the time, when bands add a short song to their record, it’s always the fun and « stupid » one. It’s like « let’s play super fast punk rock while singing whatever the hell we want. » So when I saw the number of songs and the length of that EP, I didn’t have a good feeling about it. But I gave it a try and finally, the good thing is, it’s so short and so good that you just want more, so you press Repeat, again and again.
LAST offer a brilliant fast punk rock that I just can’t get tired of. A fair amount of technicality combined with amazing melodies, great riffs and a beautiful vocal; to me, it’s the perfect balance. There’s really nothing I would change on that record except the fact that I would love to hear more songs.
As for the lyrics, they are far from stupid songs. In fact, most of them are quite deep in meaning. LAST just proved with that EP that you don’t have to write long songs to get a message across. They talk a lot about mental health struggles, which I think is a good thing despite the negative aspect of it. We live in a world where more and more people struggle every day and some people are still afraid to talk about it. It’s important to break that stigma and I really appreciate the fact that some bands are able to stand up and write about it. No need to stick our head in the sand – we’ve almost all been there at some point. Last words of the last song: WAKE UP!
I know 2020 has just started but still, I can’t help but think that this EP will end up quite high in my favorite EPs of the year. So if you haven’t listened to it yet, I highly recommend you click on this link: https://lastaustralia.bandcamp.com/album/l-a-s-t-a-d-h-d-e-p.
