In a couple of days, I’ll be on my way to Florida for my very first Fest ever. After years of looking at the crazy line ups and telling myself I had to go, I finally decided that this year was THE year. My boyfriend Jesse and my best friend Guillaume (Mr. Daily Recommendations at Punk Rock Avenue) are going to live this adventure with me and I couldn’t have asked for better partners. And the cherry on top of the cake: Punk Rock Avenue is officially one of the medias covering The Fest. I still can’t believe it!
I’ve been looking at the schedule for weeks making plans to see as many bands as I can and wondering how the hell I’m going to make it. There are so many great names on the line up that it blows my mind every time I look at it. And even if I’ve never been to The Fest before, I know I’ll have to make strategic decisions according to the venues and the line ups to get in. Hopefully, I won’t struggle too much and miss too many bands. But to be honest, I look at my personal schedule and it’s a conflict nightmare. So I already know some choices will break my heart.
Here are the bands there’s no way I’m going to miss: Dial Drive, Oh The Humanity!, No Trigger, Eat Defeat, Odd Robot, Problem Daughter, Captain Asshole, The Run Up and Überyou. If you’ve never heard of those bands before, please do yourself a favour and go listen to their music.
Like I said before, my plan is to see as many bands as I can in a day, but also to see bands I’ve never had the chance to see before. So if I have to chose between a band I really like and a band I’ve never seen, I’ll chose the band I’ve never seen for sure. Example, Masked Intruder are playing at the same exact time as Bedspin. Even if I love Masked Intruder and they are one of my favorite pop punk bands, I’ve seen them not so long ago while I’ve never had the chance to see Bedspin live and I’m in love with their last record. And I know I’ll have to make that kind of choice all weekend.
Also, it’s going to be my first fest with type 1 diabetes in another country. As I’ve never been to Gainesville, I have no clue what it looks like and I have to admit that it’s a bit stressful for me. Taking an insulin shot in a dirty bathroom is always a nightmare! But despite my stress, I know deep down that I’ll be able to manage, especially that my biggest supporter, Jesse, will be by my side.
I can’t wait to see the bands, the venues, the city… but most of all, I can’t wait to be part of the wonderful punk rock community for three days. I’ve just heard good things about The Fest and I’m super excited to finally have the chance to experience it myself. I’ll try to take pictures and maybe a couple of videos, so don’t forget to follow the Punk Rock Avenue team on Facebook and Instagram next weekend. And of course, I’ll prepare a detailed review of my trip when I’m back.
Festing friends: see you soon!!!
