It’s no secret, I’ve had a love affair with music since I’m born. There are records I enjoy, records I can appreciate at specific moments in my life, records I really like and records I literally fall in love with. And sometimes, there are records that hit me so bad, they make me cry. Those records are the best and I keep them like precious treasures in my heart. The new Hit the Switch record, Entropic, is definitely one of those records.

Most people write reviews about the technical aspects of a record. I really do appreciate the technical aspects, but it’s not what I’m looking for when I listen to music. To me, music is all about feelings and vibes. And this is why my reviews are mostly emotional. I pay a lot of attention to melodies and lyrics and how they make me feel. And I can say for sure that Entropic has everything I need to call it a perfect record.

From the first notes of the first song, I was already into it. Everything about this record is amazing: the melodies, the voice, the riffs, the lyrics. It’s the perfect mix between technical and melodic punk rock. Hit the Switch bring us sweet and energetic melodies on this record and a great mix of melancoly and agressivity. And the fact that the first song is called Perigee and the last one Apogee says a lot about Entropic. We can feel a kind of crescendo when we listen to the whole album.

I love every song, but my favorites are Down and Out, Keep the Fire, North Star and Losing Reverie. Those songs literally blew my mind away when I first heard them. I can relate so much to the lyrics of Down and Out that they make me want to cry. Same thing for the lyrics of Manic Heart Disease and Losing Reverie; the latter is definitely an heartbreaking song for someone who has to fight a disease everyday. And the lyrics of Keep the Fire hit me bad everytime I listen to the song. I have goosebumps when they sing the last part: « ’cause when I held back the pain I felt, as you walked away, I made sure to keep the fire, and it burns in spite of this, and when I knew you’d given up on me it ripped me apart and I couldn’t help but cry. » Heartbreaking song for broken hearts. And in North Star, when they sing « but it’s too laaaaaaate »… it’s like it goes straight to my heart when they sing it. The end of that song is so beautiful. I can’t get tired of listening to it.

I can relate to the lyrics of a lot of their songs according to what I’m going through right now, but actually I think a lot of people can relate to their songs as they tackle themes such as society’s problems, family, the complexity of relationships and the uncertainty of our future. The songs are all well written, which is, to me, the most important aspect of a great record. I like it when a band really has something to say and they don’t just fill a page with words to fit the music.

On the technical side, I can say that Hit the Switch impressed me with some crazy solos, like the ones in Associative Forces, Country Club Circle Jerk and Prog Reactors. Like I said before, I prefer melody over technicality, but I really do appreciate a perfect mix of those two aspects and Entropic is definitely an exemple of that kind of perfect mix.

I’ve been listening to the last Hit the Switch‘s record since its release and I can’t even find a negative thing to say about it. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. It’s going to be in my top 10 of the year for sure and probably my top 1. I hope you guys enjoy the record as much as I do.
